Hmm, I think the purchasing process needs some improvements. I asked a friend to purchase a photo, here are some observations:

1) As a first time customer, he selected an image, clicked "pay now" and registered. After that, the picture had disappeared and could not be put back in the shopping cart. The only way to solve this was to log out, log in again and repeat the process, now as a returning customer. Then it works.

This must be fixed, I don't think you often get a second chance if the transaction fails the first time. Lost customer, lost business.

2) After having payed at Paypal it was not obvious how to get back to the site, apparently you had to click on the mail address connected to the Paypal account.

3) The confirmation:

- "Thank you for your purchase ...." looks like a link but leads nowhere.
- The link "Licensing and downloads" leads to the purchased photo. Not very logical.
-The information is not so well aligned, looks a bit messy. The options information is not aligned with the header (see attachment). The number of the photo mixes with the options.

This area could do with an improvement.

Where to download the file is a little obscure after purchasing.

Ideally you want a "thank you for purchase" and "Download your file here" button / link.

When I was logged in first the image showed up in the cart.
When I dropped in as new customer and clicked download - then registered - I had to logout and then back in again to see the file.

The page needs to be refreshed manually by customer. Ideally this needs to be improved

Instead of refreshing the page, there could be a button saying "download your file" with a link re-sending people to the downloaf area..

This will disguise refreshing process while functioning the same way as refreshing..

For Pink Badger - and anyone else who had not done so.

You need to set up your Paypal return page

Go to your Paypal Account (premier or business, I do not think Personal has this option)

Profile
My Selling Preferences
Website preferences
then click on Update to add details

First option is   yes

Return address is http://***  your site ****/customer-licence-and-file-management-area/

Below that I have Paypal Account Optional (either yes or on cannot remember) and everything else off

No need to do those steps..

Mine works without changing anything at paypal..

Well, return works for me as well, but the text on the return link is confusing, since it shows the email address I used for my PP account. (at least that is what I understand, I did not try it myself).

Mark's didn't return until after he had put the address into Paypal this morning  and it sounds like Pink Badger's does not return either so she might have to, it should take you to the download page automatically when someone has finished paying in PP

Like I said, it did return, but only by clicking on my mail address. The problem is that I have personal PP at the moment, and I can't customize it. :-[

personal pp account is not the right way to go.. that is the reason.. I have a "premier" account and that's the least you should have..

I need to research this, but perhaps someone has the answer.

I do have a business premier account with Paypal, but I set it up for sales of my stock book initially and have piggybacked stock photos onto it. As a result, I didn't enable a return screen - if you buy a photo with paypal, you have to click on the "return to [email protected]" which is close enough to the name of my stock photo site to work.

Is it possible to set Paypal up to return to a page on the originating site - ie have two return pages depending on the site they came from? I guess I could create a new Paypal account just for stock photos, but I would prefer not to.

Hi Steve, I think you might need two accounts (they need different email addresses and different bank accounts).  I feel we need to make it as easy for our customers as possible so they come back, that means going straight to where they can download

Really? The reason this all isnt working is because it doesnt work with a personal account but it will work with a business account? Do you have a link to paypal where it explains that? Does the business account cost money? Hmmmm. I wonder why i havent had any issues all along with test purchases until the last couple of days. I dont mind changing but it seems like this was discussed early on and it was decided that personal worked just fine.

Once i start getting a billion downloads i would have to change anyway because i think they start charging you after so many transactions or something like that.

I have a personal and a premier account, only the latter offers the option to auto-return after a purchase.  Maybe it is different in different countries, I have run into problems before where PP does something in a few countries but not in others, PP personal payments/gifts are not available everywhere for instance.

If yours works without enabling auto-return then ignore my post but if you are not automatically taken back to download page after purchase then this is a way of enabling it.

I don't have a link now but the reason I got a premier account was because paypal said personal accounts are not for online shops..

Didn't cost a penny.. I have had this premier account for years now and use it both for stock sites and my sites..

When I upgraded there were 3 options:

- personal
- premier
- business

The conditions of premier was sufficient for me so I picked that one..

Things and options may be different now as it has been years since I upgraded..

You are not supposed to have a personal account when you do business. Its no laughing matter. PayPal will start asking questions when they see you are taking business transactions on a personal account.

I have been receiving payments from agencies for YEARS now with a personal account. If the business acct doesnt cost anything i will be happy to get one. If paypal needs to start taking a percentage of my sales like an agency, then i might have to come up with a different solution.

Let me beat you all to the punch...how utterly unprofessional of me and its amateurs like me that ruin it for everybody!  ;)

By the way, i am fairly certain paypal decides when i am receiving too many payments and makes me move to a business acct. there was a discussion about this on this board. At work so if u dont believe you will need to search yourself. I am on an iad and at work. If i remember later, i will see if i can dig it up.

It looks as if it is possible to specify the return URL depending on the site the customer came from, if the following code is included in the appropriate program sending them to Paypal.

<input type="hidden" name="notify_url" value="[YOURSITEURL_WHICH_HANDLES_IPN]">
<input type="hidden" name="return" value="[YOUR_SITE_URL_WHICH_HANDLES_RETURN_URL]">
<input type="hidden" name="_notify-synch:cmd" value="_notify-synch">\

Leo - is this something you could consider in your updated plugin?

Can someone give me the sum-up of this thread? Is it a bug thread, gunuine issues with the theme, or just learning how to do paypal?

I think it started with a request to set up a proper return path from Paypal to the site instead of clicking on the return to email link on the Paypal screen. That question was answered, so I don't think there is an issue there.

Then I asked if you could use the same Paypal premier account for two different source websites and how the return worked. I checked online and found you could if you include the extra code in the sending site. That is the code I pasted in. That would be a nice enhancement for people who run different sites from the same paypal account.
