Author Topic: When to set up networking (Read 14037 times)

Been working on finishing up my site today. Upgraded my hosting tonight but that takes 24-48 hours to propagate after that have to update other things. It got me to wondering when I should set up the network. Should I do it now or wait until after I do my updates after my upgrade.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Anita, I've been wondering the same thing. Glad you asked the question!

I've still got a ton of images left to upload, but what's already up is quite respectable. I'm ready to network but not sure if I should do that now or wait until my port is fully uploaded. Advice on that would be appreciated.

And then there's this question... My port is 95% North American nature plus about 5% historical sites (but no people, high-tech, "lifestyle", sports, etc). Most buyers will come to my site looking for natural subjects from North America.

I've been assuming I should network only with other nature photographers, since it doesn't seem logical to branch out too far from that subject. Is there any reason to drop that assumption?

And... are there other nature specialists in the SYS system who would like to network with me? Even from other countries and continents, it might be an interesting and synergistic mix.

I envy you. I can't upload the rest of my port until the upgrade is finished. Wouldn't be a bad idea to network with similar but then there's something that nags at me with that. What if they need something other than nature? It's confusing and ultimately up to us to figure that out.

Me I have my hands in everything I do vectors, 3d and photos. Would I try to connect with those that do the same or make my network as diverse as possible?

I'm assuming that if somebody comes to my site, they're looking for nature. No Google search on "food" or "lifestyle" or "sports team vectors" will lead them to me.

And in reverse... somebody who searches for "hamburgers with fries" will not be delighted to land on a site offering "Olive-sided Flycatchers" or "California Ground Squirrels."

I hope we can both get advice about that from the experienced sages who hang out on this forum.

Networking with similar-interest people will certainly spike your relevance in the areas you mention.

Also as a new site (I've noticed quite a few times) google goes through a "naive" phase where they rank you for the strangest keywords. After its fully indexed, processed, and google's seen your site getting clicks (getting to know your audience), the whole situation becomes far closer to reality.

There will be come a point when you say:

"We have normality!"

I might be a good match for nature networking. Take a look at my site. Although I have only app. 450 photos of 3000+ online you'll get an idea. Note, however, that I am NOT strictly photographing nature. I basically shoot everything that strikes my eye while roaming outdoors. That means I basically don't have any studio, people, food, staged etc. shots (with very few exceptions, maybe).

when I first asked what people wanted in networking partners, most answered complementary sites, but I quickly realized that your analysis is closer to what's going to happen in realtime -- few of us are going to attract viewers based on our name or brand, so it makes sense to network with others with similar content; eventually we should have network request data that can let us see what's happening

In my case I don't have a set thing that I do. My port is extremely diversified considering that I don't do people shots.

Still wondering if I should way to enable the network or wait.

That's the way I see it, Steve.

As I understand the point of networking... if somebody comes to my site looking for such-and-such a bird or critter and doesn't find what they want in my port, they'll be directed on to other sites in my network that might have it. But that will only happen if my "partner" sites have similar content. If their content is completely (or even mostly) different, the buyer isn't likely to find a suitable match there.

Actually, I do think your site and mine might be good matches for one another. We're both located in North America, so there's some overlap. I'm happy to link to yours, and... maybe you'll do the same with mine?

As soon as I had my front page (home) sorted out and figured out how to do some page layouts after reading and viewing the getting started tutorials I decided to go live. I figure Google takes time to find your site and also Google seems to like regular updates and activity for seo, so I thought rightly or not that regular daily uploading of my photographs would help with the seo, instead of uploading offline the going live.

Like Martha, I'm not sure about site linking subjects, I have a couple of links and will be looking for more, I did think adding a vector artist or two might make sense as I don't do that type of work.

Seems food is the #1 theme on SY.

My upgrade finally took now it's just a matter of waiting for things to sync back up again. So my site is offline for the moment for around 24-72 hours thought I don't believe I've ever needed to wait that long.

I upgraded my hosting from free to paid yesterday. I'm just waiting on the domain to take the new nameservers.
