Nearly a year ago I wrote a blog post about my experiences with Capture One Pro as I was so frustrated with Lightroom's sluggish performance. I've done an update as not only are there new versions of both pieces of software, but I have switched to a Fuji XT-2 (from a Canon 5D Mk II) and needed to assess handling of the new RAF files.

In case it is relevant to anyone else, here's a link to the blog (there's a link in the post to the original comparison if anyone wants to look at that too)

Thanks - that was a fat-fingered typo, not editorializing :) I've fixed it.

I switched from LR to C1 a couple years ago and never looked back.

IMHO, comparisons like the one linked to here don't mean much.  I think you can get pretty much the same result with either software, once you get used to them.  There are a whole bunch of factors in play here - not just curves and sharpening, but 'clarity', 'structure' , shadows/highlights and more.  The defaults for all of these are different, and that's what reviewers focus on.

The big things for me, in making the switch, were C1's comprehensive 'local adjustments', and the fact that LR just doesn't seem to be advancing and will probably end up as subscription-only.

Does C1 support keywording, descriptions, and other metadata...along with searches on metadata?...e.g. could I search for all images with the keyword 'green tree'?
Does it have a database like LR?

Yes - C1 has what it calls a catalog as well as just setting up a session (primarily intended for shooting tethered). You can enter keywords and other metadata into a catalog and search on them - you might want to look at this two-part blog post earlier this year that Phase One did on switching from Lightroom to C1 which runs through where you'll find all the LR stuff in C1

They also have a YouTube channel with lots of tutorials

I like C1 a lot, I like how it manages noise, colors, sharpening, and the dedicated color tone correction module (wheel) is really very useful.
I think that it is better than Lightroom from these points of view.

But I don't like the C1 system of sessions and the files management (it is a nightmare for me).
For this I prefer Lightroom, and as I find that it is very important when you have tons of images to be able to manage them in a simple and efficient way I continue to stick to Lightroom (not that I am so happy of this).
I understand that it is also a matter of habit.

If only it could be a way to easily integrate LR catalog in C1

I love C1. I switched from LR because of the superior tethering, but once I got a handle on the controls I find it much better than LR, except for archiving. I personally like the sessions. I shoot tethered to a laptop and mirror the session live to an attached hard drive. Since sessions are self-contained I then transfer it from the hard drive to my main computer. When I am finished editing and exporting I import the whole session into LR. Having a rigid naming convention on the sessions helps as well.

I switched from Canon 5d Mark II to Fuji X-T2 and had to switch to C1, because Lightroom demosaic of X-Trans files is subpar.

However I use C1 only for RAW conversion as catalog capability of C1 is terrible compared to lightroom (I do travel photography and have to manage large numbers of images)

You don't have to use sessions at all if you don't find them useful (I don't use them).

You can use C1 catalogs (the equivalent of the LR database) which works similarly, although you can have several catalogs open at once with C1 Pro which is nice (and which LR could certainly do if Adobe wanted to invest in it). You might want to look at their blogs or videos specifically for users migrating from Lightroom to see if the current release is any more to your liking - not sure when you last looked at C1 Pro's catalog features.

It certainly is a big speed bump to have to switch software. A few years ago I switched to Lightroom after spending a long time using ACR in Photoshop; that was painful and then I grew to love Lightroom (mostly; it has quirks that tick me off). In the more distant past I have used DXO Optics Pro and even further ago Capture One (back before ACR started to be credible)

I don't switch on a whim. There's always some problem - lack of support for something, for example - that leads to me investing the time in switching. If things are working well for you where you are, you'd be nuts to switch to new software :)

Hi all,

Sine short time I am also.using capture one pro for sony. As a Sony user I only paid 50 USD for the pro version. However it makes only sense if you only use sony. Other cameras you can not attach within.this version. But great opportunity for Sony users.

It was about one year ago in fact (C1 10.0), then I used C1 only to correct single images, so without using the catalog features.
One other thing that have always stopped me is the tricky way to see before/after: in Lightroom you have just to hit the \ key, in C1, as I remember, you have to make a copy of the original file.
And also the possibility to switch on/off each section of the correction development module.
But probably I have missed something here too, and I should watch more tutorials :)

I confess that if I find that the use of the correction module is similar enough to all what one can find in the competitors' softwares, the C1 catalog part is more than confusing when one arrives from Lightroom.
And so far I have never really had time to deepen this part of the software.

I remember the "old" times when I was using iView Media Pro / Expression Media / Phase One Media Pro; I never found another application so powerful to manage any kind of digital assets.

In 10.2 they've added preview (although I don't like the way you get to it; hold Option and press the master reset icon). I've written to support to request the ability to add that to the keyboard shortcuts customization - I'd make the feature use the \ key just like LR

Not sure what exactly you're referring to with the on/off switch, but there is a reset icon on each feature which you can Option-Click to see the image without just that set of adjustments. You can also uncheck each Local Adjustment layer to see the image without that layer's changes (which is a bit like LR's switch on gradients and radial except that it's layer by layer instead of all radial, all spot healing).

I refer to this (see attachment)
And option click on the reset icon perfectly correspond to what I was looking for; thank you.

What about the SilkyPix Raw File Converter EX supplied by Fuji (there's a new version).  Does anyone use that?

I too have now sold my Canon gear and changed to the Fuji X system.  Bought an X-T2 and couple of lenses to get started.  Only a few days but very impressed so far.

garbage. Too slow and clumsy. Though I haven't tried a new version yet.
Let's see what Fuji rolls out in November (they promise some kind of a new processor that uses camera attached to desktop  :o)

Adobe just made the switch to Capture One Pro (except for old catalogs of images going back to 2002) a done deal. They're not selling a perpetual license for Lightroom after version 6 (which gets camera updates through the end of 2017). What they've announced for those who did buy into the Photography subscription plan sounds pretty muddled to me - I think they're focusing more on the enthusiast market and leaving the professional photographers as second fiddle.

Enjoying using my new Fuji equipment.  However I find the results from the 18-55 lens rather hit and miss, with an unacceptably high number of blurry and out-of-focus results.  I've searched through the internet forums and find that many people have had problems with this lens - something to do with a conflict between the OIS system and the camera body.  I updated the body and lens firmware but the results are still patchy.  Never got this sort of thing with my Canon gear.  Looks like I'll have to get this lens exchanged or checked, or upgrade to the more expensive 16-55 F2.8.

I read a review of this lens which got excellent results.  But the reviewer qualified that statement with the remark 'if you can get a good one'.  Seems there's lots of variation in quality for this lens in particular.  Shame, because it's a nice size and weight lens, whereas the 16-55 is more like a housebrick.

I've now tried out most of the RAW converters and the one that stands head and shoulders above the others (for me) is Photo Ninja.  Exceptional quality and beautiful rendition of lighting.  Completely eliminates all wormy artifacts. Very nice sharp results.  This is the one for me and I'll now stop trying out others.

Well, there is still the cost issue. Capture One Pro is $300. That's 2.5 years of the Lightroom Photoshop subscription (assuming Adobe doesn't raise the sub rate), and that's not counting the cost of possible C1 Pro upgrades in those 2.5 years. Also, who knows what the situation will be in 2.5 years? It's a tough call
