Is grfx dead now? I'm afraid to upgrade to the latest version of woocommerce because it seems like grfx has completely disappeared and probably won't be upgraded any more.

What happened there?

I don't get the sense that it's chaos again. Rather, he's letting those he trusts into the loop.

to me, it looks more like there's some reason for this. I think he knows what he's doing, and it's sure easy to call this chaos for the ones who don't...!

Thank you Martha and Farbled for jumping in with the updates.

Yes, there is a group of people I am in touch with and help. I enjoy the quiet life now and my previous work has given me the privilege of being in touch with some great people.

grfx was created for microstock talent, whereas having it on wordpress.org was simply enabling alot of random-unestablished artists to associate grfx with their sites and work. This was a noticable and stark difference to the legacy project we did where the sites 90% established talent.

Because grfx is always stable (literally, not one upgrade of either wordpress or woocommerce has hurt it) I did not see the point in offering constant updates. It is now on github where updates will come as we need them, should we ever. Unfortunately stability gives the illusion of inactivity. I feel like I should add some tabs or spaces to the files and update them just so it says "updated recently, everything is safe!"

I don't come to msg as often as I used to, but when I do, it's nice to see "the orange man" here..

I am still using Leo's legacy symbiostock (yeap, not grfx, and not the new symbiostock, still that good old symbiostock) and even though it's been more than a year without a single update, it still works like a charm..

(my wordpress version is up to date and there has been no issues or conflicts between wp and the old symbiostock..)

I think the only time an update is crucial, is when there is a revolution like "the introduction of mobile compatible responsive designs" or it's time to get rid of the tables, and use divs instead.. or if there is an issue breaking the site..

Why fix it, if it ain't broken?

It would be great to rally up the original group that started this thing. It would be like a reunion party.

It might be good to reinstate the updates channel and start innovating with the legacy concept again. Its like a crashed spaceship that just needs its engines cleaned. At the very least we can improve performance and looks. Depending on interest, we can start repairing the original network. It was a great thing to experience when things were blossoming.

Depending on how many sites are left, who would like to get updates, etc, it might be the 'all in' we need to get started.

I think Leo missed some serious support with the Symbiostock project. Not in form of random community support, but rather a coordinated framework not only of developers but of business folks too. I think his project was brilliant and genius, but nobody is perfect and nowadays online business environment is complex and challenging.

One person to take care of developement, coding, microstock business strategy, VAT and tax compliance incorporation, Server administration, Sofware sales, Client support, SEO, business strategy, licensing terms, etc.? Thats insane.

I think symbiostock was one the few attempts and chances the microstock community had to show its power and get more independent. It failed because of lack of professionalism. Sadly? Nope. I don`t think so. Professionality requires experience to grow. Failure is part of the process to stack up experience. The community has grown a lot since then. Curious what the next level is.

Regarding grfx: I do not think it will have a big role in the community or industry.

We'll rebrand/rename Symbiostock LLC and finally put in place some big guns I've been assembling over the last six months. I think the old and the new people alike will enjoy this addition to their arsenal. I'm officially active again.

Hey Leo,
How will the search system work? Is there a way to form a group of sorts within the search system? I think this will be a key factor on successfully targeting buyers if you have a nice pool of images from very high level talented stock contributors curating their own library. I guess what I am asking is the opposite of microstock philosophy and more traditional vetted/curated library by contributors.

In a while I'm going to put out the revised system for beta testing. To answer your question would involve explaining things not yet ready for public eyes, but I can say that all sites will share an algorithm that naturally pushes the cream to the top.

The emphasis is always on independence and decentralization.

That was the bane of my existence with that last run. I think it was the fatal flaw actually - and even when I tried to avoid it! While I do have an improved plan, I'll always appreciate feedback and ideas from those with more experience in the industry. Creating a solution with a degree of immunity to these issues is a huge priority.

An important update:

It turns out the grfx plugin had a quiet following of developers that are interested in seeing it active again. Someone else has offered to help maintain it! This is a breath of fresh air to say the least.

Expect to see it back on wordpress.org again.

For the Tech Guys

grfx has always been optimized for MULTISITE which means that with the help of https://premium.wpmudev.org/ you can actually host photographers / illustrators for a monthly fee. In short: make money running an image-selling network.

grfx is now for developers and web-savvy people to make money on. grfx will be let out to programmers and elites of the industry to develop for their own needs. Free of charge, open source, and with contributions from the pros.

You will find grfx code is well-commented and understandable, and generates beautiful PHPDocs

Blender 3d went through a similar evolution - now I know everything will be ok.

My other project is well along and will likely have some compatibility with grfx.

Even better than a WIN/WIN is a WIN/WIN/WIN no?

In a short time it will be re-hosted on wordpress.org and all documentation will be updated to reflect this change of direction.
