You can also use the microphone button to speak the words instead of typing.

Large smartphones make it easy and after a couple of letters the site throws up all kinds of different possible keywords that could be possible for what you are typing.

SS smartphone contributor app works fine, easy to describe and keyword and when done if you need to make changes you can do so on the site from your computer.

Nothing to it especially for those with kids that do lots of texting.

Off Topic / Re: UAS and Model Aircraft - AKA "Drones"
« on: February 11, 2015, 19:05 »
Are you within 5 miles of an airport or military airport? If so, flying drones there at any height is illegal, as far as I know. Unless they're testing them at the airport, like they will be at mine. Then it's just hunky dory to have them skimming your rooftop and treetops.
No I am only in a flight path for their training and a direct line to get over the water so they can hit the afterburner and exceed the sound barrier legally.

Besides they are not allowed to fly below 400 feet in civilian airspace but they do quite often.

So I live in a military flight path.

Now I have trees that are easily 100-200 feet tall and I get Jets coming over top of them at speeds easily reaching 400-500 mph that their jet wash bends the tops of the trees so this tells you how low they are which is well below the radar for training purposes I am sure but now what if I was flying a drone in my air space under 400 feet and one of these jets flew into it and sucked it into their engine and then they crashed !

Whos fault is it?

Not mine but yet it will be!

Even though I am under 400 feet the military will do all their BS testing and determine it is my fault rather then admit to what they did that is wrong!

There is a post from Jon Oringer that states there are now over 70,000 contributors.

And I wonder if like some places, they will stop taking new contributors? Same logic, why do they need more? Have applications once a year, based on portfolio, not a few images as samples.

SS Members by registration year rounded.
2005 - 4300
2006 - 3900 = 8200
2007 - 3800 = 12,000
2008 - 5500 = 17,500
2009 - 7200 = 24,700
2010 - 5000 = 30,700

I don't have data for years after that. I will make an assumption (without proof) that other agencies had similar growth in new members.

What I'm getting at is this. Not only has the volume of images increased greatly, the number of competitors has also grown.

I wonder if someday, like GL stock, they will stop taking anymore images? How many images do you really need for the buyers? This does concern me about how rapid the libraries are growing.

For this one I'd say - shoot them and don't tell anyone else what you found.

Of all the searches above which are very famous they just have so many images on the site that the buyers don't need to go anywhere else chit SS has 48 million images but hardly any of the ones I as a buyer could be looking for to use because no one has shot many of them yet but they are there and they are very popular.

To hell with drones and go pros!

Get a Mad Max one man copter with a real DSLR and go to it!

And as long as you stay under 400 feet all is fine have fun and just don't run outta gas!

I'd agree and it will never end.

I'm just angry because I don't have my own Drone with a HD GoPro on it. I still want to fly like a bird, over cows and cornfields...  ;D But come on, why would I spend a couple grand to do that? At least some people have sensible commercial uses, and that's what's banned?

So what do we get? People with loads of money, buying a toy, and causing these personal invasions of privacy and disruptions. Heck, maybe it should be "only for commercial use", licensed, and then restrict the private use?

Yes, just a thought. You probably know my viewpoint. I'm for freedom of choice and rights being with individuals not bloated or oppressive government regulations.

Uncle Pete, you're being stymied in an attempt to make sense of a world regulated by government bots, trying to regulate a renegade populace.

And today there are reports from LA, Chicago, Dallas and others with drones being flown at airports with pilot sightings from 1,800 feet to as high as 8,500 feet!

The laws are boiling in the pots somewhere just waiting for the simmering and distribution.

http://consumerist.com/2015/02/06/deputy-fired-for-threatening-to-arrest-photographer-who-took-pictures-of-police-in-public/

"As weve covered before, courts have ruled time and again that police cant force citizens to stop taking photographs of them in public so long as you dont interfere with their work. That doesnt stop cops from ordering people to put their cameras away, and didnt prevent on sheriffs deputy in Washington state from making multiple empty threats of arrest against a Seattle news photographer who took pics of a police action in public. But after an investigation by the sheriffs office, that deputy has been dismissed for abusing his authority."

And down the story a bit -

In 2011, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruled in Glik v. Cunniffe that private citizens have the right to record public officials, including police, in a public place.

The court held that the First Amendments proscription on laws abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press encompasses a range of conduct related to the gathering and dissemination of information.

And so along comes the microstocker.

Read this as "Staff Photographers" not all photographers. And it's the last six of the staff photographers. AP already did this years ago. (2010) Huge staff cuts, as have many others. The major newspapers that are still left, let the photographers go and asked the reporters to carry cameras.

Advertising revenue for print publications has dropped as marketing moves to the Internet. You should all recognize that for what good the Internet is for new business, it's kicking the heck out of traditional businesses of all kinds. The obvious point, related to this story and this forum, would be, traditional photography markets.

What this eventually means for SI and the rest is, lower standards of content quality. Less original and less professional insightful work.

They will get most of their shots from agencies (like Getty and USA Today) and these same shots will be available to everyone else. SI used to have the top pros, who know their sports and brought back significant and stunning images, whether it be action or artistic interpretations.

It's all about cost cutting. Income drops, expenses need to be cut. Employees have insurance and pensions and get a salary. Freelance or other agencies, get paid for what they supply, nothing more.

Drone found on the White House lawn this morning i the wake of a historic Blizzard that is arriving and it is  already snowing in DC!

Gee I wonder why?

Think maybe just maybe because someone wanted to get aerials of the snowstorm and perhaps the wind blew it off course and into the Lawn.

Now another reason for limitations.
