Shutterstock.com / Re: shutterstock not working
« on: January 18, 2017, 22:04 »
Their new head of IT is doing a bang-up job so far!

Maybe he's ready to announce he wants to spend more time with his family?

LMAO, first ... it's not even a month after the 12 days of christmas, so not recovered from santa claus sleepy dwarf syndrome
second... i just noticed the chinese say soon they will celebrate the cock year. and the monkey year, as my colleague from china tells me is not over yet..
so it's excusable they monkey about at ss HQ all monkey year...
and new year chinese , it will be time for them at ss HQ to cock up even more

as you can see, even the stars are making excuses for ss cock-up and monkey about.
so maybe not until 2019 we see someone competent being hired for ss.

but i will first check my irish almanac  to see what the leprechauns think of why ss f***up so much.

52
furthermore, the quality on those blogs are not even that sterling.

53
it looks like any other blogger that would use our photos, so i would guess the blogger, the writer of those articles would have paid to dl our photos.
as for the size, it's not really that large.. 600 by 900. it's unlikely you can make too much of the image if you steal them.
no different from those magazines web sites that give you as large as 1900 by 1070 etc..
if i rely on photoshop to show me the print size, 600 by 900 or even 1900 by 1070 may not give you the quality of a good print.
according to my personal prefer though... which is why i figure the min req for ss is 4MP.

54
How did using the image harm her?

If I was a lawyer I'd go with the alcohol angle (apparently they comped in some alcohol in front of her that wasn't actually there). Seeing as it would be difficult to disprove, they could say stuff like... she's been invited to less events as people assume she's an alcoholic, she feels she's been overlooked for promotion as her employees think she has a drinking problem, her relationship has been tense since her husband found out she was drinking in the day etc etc.

LOL that would not wash in USA. it might work in a " religious country " where women are seen as harlot to be drinking. .. or maybe, just maybe in Ohio (??? mormon country,etc)..
but in a place like NY, etc.. where alcohol or drug are "household basics" it won't work.
in my opinion, that is.

the only good out of this is that it teaches big companies like this to tell them,
"silly silly, you thought you can be cheap and not hire a regular model ..
like those newspapers that only use readers' freebies and wire photos".
cost far less to have just paid a model.

55
hey all
i want to know how many vector files should i have to make at least $100 per month ?

Somewhere between 1 and 10000

that's right. the answer was given by sjlocke to the hundredth thread asking the same question re photos..  to which he said..
"one good photo or 1,000 bad photos".
then also, it depends on your keywords too. spamming would not get you downloads,
it gets you views but eventually you shoot yourself on the foot as true buyers will ignore your port from there on.

like others say, many rely on numbers and thousands of same thing  , while others rely on
well selected single image from one shoot. in the end,
i think i said this too before..
one thousand images with one dl won't get you placed on page one..
one image with 1,000 dls will.

so, both works.. be a factory sell millions or burgers or be a crtical stocker
and serve a la carte. the latter is less tiring... you don't have to feed the beast.

56
good question.
there are so many color scheme in ss, and i doubt if any of them are big sellers.
if it is based on my own historical success, i would say, anything with sky...
or anything on white.
because in my case, my sellers are the same old same old boring micro stock sellers..
that yuri, sjlocke, etc.. sells regularly.

i would say it is because micro stock buyers are not buyers of creative photography,
they are the same old dude behind the desk of an ad agency paid to buy loads of photos per week
to fill the company's clientele needs.
he/she really has no time to suddenly look for something different rummaging through the first 100 pages of same old same old ...
why would he/she?  there is no incentive to change buying habits . in fact, in business, changing habit is taboo.

just my piece.

p.s.  but really, if i knew the answer....   Hell , would i tell y'all !!! LOL

57
before my point, i like to say it was both the mistake or negligence of photographer and chipotle.
but the amount the lady is suing is debatable. it would make sense if she were Angelina Jolie, etc..
and that she brought in big profits for Chipotle with her image of her as a customer.

but let's say chipotle produced proof that they never made a largest profit after her photo was used.. iow, the business never made more than it did last year, or maybe even last five years,etc..
i doubt if the judge would award her anything.

just my layman's opinion. but then again, in USA anything is possible, which is why they sue you even for a slipping on a banana peel, or had an accident because a snail walked in your way LOL

71% to the right of this page..
and Wall St is getting bullish..

not sure how ss stock is doing as i shorted to take profit when they went wacko with the 35$ payout , 7/10 criterion abolition, super flood of marijuana, etc etc

maybe the rumpelstiltkin Oringer (and other CEOs) are waking up from his/their sleep to clean house for 2017. if so, i cheer them on for a back to the past SS ...

Dreamstime.com / Re: how to disable all files on DT
« on: January 03, 2017, 12:20 »
i would just leave it there, since obviously they don't sell.. just sitting there gathering virtual dust.
the only ones you should be concerned about would be those which you made exclusive..
as i assume you want to submit them to other sites.

i don't know how many sites i still have an account with. when i started donkey years ago with finding leaf's site here, i submitted to literally every sites. but after months , years,.. i realised only ss is were the only two worth uploading, ..

a year ago, i think, can't remember, .. i had time to kill, so i went back to see those old sites,
they still have about 20 cents to 20 dollars earnings. most of them still waiting for reaching the
cash-out limit of much more than the present ss of 35 bucks.

things like that, makes me appreciate ss, even when at times , they become anal .

Happy New Year!

Shouldn't this be, how's 2017 so far? Based on my sales, it's going to be a terrible year.  ;)

Happy New Year everyone!

General Stock Discussion / Re: How do you call this?
« on: December 22, 2016, 09:20 »
but this doesnt hurt me, i dont design icons, and it doesnt hurt photographers at all. if you design icons you might be pissed off though

Why would I be pissed? It would only hurt me if I made icons of graduation caps, pencils, lightbulbs? Like the marijuana guy, if I don't have any of that, it doesn't hurt me. It makes SS look stupid and full of spam, but it doesn't cross over any of my sales.

The top 100 page is just by number of files. Is 4800 spam icons in the top 100?

Oh great Link was German, now my SS searches are all in German. Bottom of the page, lower right, click your language of choice.

agree. but also it indicates where ss is prioritizing ...
bloating to give clueless shareholders the idea that they are over-stocking because they
are still in need of images ...
like the owner of a pest-infested building trying to sell his rental apartment block
with full vacany sign.

the bottom will fall out eventually, esp now that adobe is here..
as clients get fed-up of looking for images and see marijuana and other image spam
plus those title spamming images.

get ready to rename shutterstock with an "i" to replace "u".

Shutterstock.com / Re: November and December Drop in sales
« on: December 22, 2016, 09:11 »
November and December are very bad - December being much worse... I am debating to go with Macro at this rate.

Do!  with the right agencies its a completely different story. Joined micro from the start in 2004 and have had some great times and earnings but now I feel they have played their game to the end and what remains are the leftovers. The reason all play around with the search is probably because they know its come to an end and they want to earn as much as possible before the crash. :)

so right, gyllens!!! as yada3 said, the piece of the pie is small... almost left to nibblers.
the writing on the wall was when ss reduced the entry criterion from 7/10 to 1/10 and the payout limit down to 35 bucks. it's like telling us, don't expect much to give you ppl anymore...
whereas before even $100 payout limit is like payout every month possible,
unlike all the micros to the right of this page, eg dreamstime , big stock, alamyetc ..would take you 200 years to reach payout of $100, LOL

still, ss payout monthly better than anyone to the right, even if it is 35 bucks low.

macro is the only way to go via agency now. and of course, back to selling your own.
without a middle man eating up most of your earning, it is easier to sell at a much lower price.
the trick is to find the market.
i know one old colleague who left micro a couple of years ago, now doing well at ebay selling framed prints of his micro works. he says he won't go back to wasting time on micro, even with ss.

still, i watch adobe... as they did not come into the micro for nothing.
they must have something in mind.

To close this thread, they did not negociate even a single cent and agreed to pay 25k$ USD for exclusive copyright and worldwide distribution. Either I made a fair price or they found it low enough not to negociate, but comparing to microstock earning, this is a good victory for copyrights, very happy about this ending just before Christmas. Attorney will cost me around 2k$ CDN but was well worth it.

If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, it can be worth it to defend your rights yourself with an attorney, even if it's just an official letter sent.

Happy Holidays! :)

congrats, definitely a happy hols for you. i wonder what would have been the outcome
had ss took it into their own hands ;)
you strike it rich by being in the right place and the right time ..and of course, the right attorney.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy 6th? Surely this is a joke..
« on: December 17, 2016, 17:44 »
Maybe I'm stubborn but I'm sticking with Alamy! I like their business model and they seem to treat contributors with respect.

They appear to suit my style for editorial and travel. RF isolated on blue sky stuff I'll keep sending over to Shutterstock.

I've been submitting for about a year now and here's where I'm at (still waiting for that $300+) but I feel it's coming.

Total Images: 1,276
Gross earnings: $96 (4 sales)
Net earnings: $33

Total views: 6845
Total zooms: 31
Total CTR: 0.45

i must be missing something here. how is it you are happy with alamy
with 1276 images earning 96 bucks in 1 year and 6846 views???
this many views at ss would get you more in a month.

alamy 6th, possible, envato 4th, no way jose, impossible, these polls are manipulated for sure

It's quite ridiculous to claim that the poll is manipulated just because you don't like it.

What I'm wondering about though is whether the poll is statistically relevant. E.g., if only successful Envato users report earnings, then they will be pushed up too far. Same in the other direction. A mass of unsuccessful microstockers reporting low earnings on Alamy might push them down in the stats, while many who are successful don't participate because they're not in this microstock forum.

i would say the polls reflect who in general will succeed , as opposed to a handful of big earners with a certain agency.
iow, if you're a newbie and intend to make money, you would do better with ss, is, fotolia, ..

you are right in saying successful don't participate , which is good too,
as just because a handful earn 80 % of the agency's sales, does not mean you are going to
be the new top seller .
so i would say, the poll is demographically-correct, ....
is that how you say it??? demograph???
iow, almost anyone can make money based on the earning rating here.

"This mormning though I had a fantastic surprise my other agency had sold two of the pictures with world-rights etc and for the hefty price of. $.6000!! ( my percentage) I nearly fainted I thought sales like that was a thing of the past."

60 cents caused you to faint?

last time i gave a panhandler 60 cts, he threw it back in my face, "*, what's that???"
i wanted to let him know i am a microstock photographer,
but i was afraid too, he might bark back at me to go panhandle instead of walking about in my
expensive camera :)

here's the new world pecking order... (top earners to bottom dwellers)...

tossing burger (cost investment - bus far, work clothes, work shoes.)
squeegee kid (zero cost investment)
panhandler   (zero cost investment)
microstock photographer (nikon or canon equipment)

We're selling a commodity, most of the time, not art. Buyers have 1000s of choices and more every day. Competition is doubled from two years ago. How should we expect to have growing sales and income with that? But people blame the agency, not the source of the problem. Competition and over supply.

definitely  over supply. ..
and individually, even more for those who cannibalize their own port by uploading them to 20 agencies thinking it will increase their cumulative earnings. i doubt that.
for this, you see our peers here saying xxx went up 50%, ss went down 50%,etc..
it still ends up killing your own port at the agency which sells best for you.

i also believe those sites which were in the big 4 and mid tier that are still single digit
should just give up. in business, it is said 5-6 yrs to turn , i think most of the agencies to the right
have been with us at least 10 years now.  pack it in.

the only way to cut it in an over-supplied industry like micro is to be niche...
like stocksy, offset, ...
we all know it's futile to try to be another ss.

hopefully, adobe will do something difference, instead of trying to replace istock as
the main challenger for the pie, as you call it.

contributors don't need another ss; they need another agency that will sell
something other than tomato,etc.. on white, or business ppl in suits with white teeth.

69
The thing is the trending aesthetic keeps changing, both with food photography, lifestyle shots, graphic design etc. Im personally more in favour of automatically deleting files that havent sold in 5 or more years or something along the lines. Most of the uploaded stuff never sells. Im also for stricter limits on uploading huge batches of similar graphics/shots.

I more or less agree with you, but remember that fads and trends re-cycle...what's old is sometimes new again.

yes, agree with both. but consider that ss sellers are consistent from day 1,
it is most likely that non-sellers will continue to stay invisible if not selling after 5 years.
it would make sense to delete them, re-process and submit as new ... with better keywords of course.

70
I never heard of subject release either...

I saw his black and white drawings and is possible that previous Reviewers got approved without releases because they might thought some were drawn directly on photoshop or adobe illustrator.

Usually anything that is scanned will request a property release...at least this is the case with Shutterstock and they are very strict about it.

ah, good point. yes, i do remember in the glorydays of dreamstime with carmen,etc(..,... before they went ballistic on similars... when that time i decided to leave due to the ridiculous limits...)
that they did require something like that for silhouettes,etc..
it must be that they suspected this is not straight off design , but more a copy from a photo,etc..

71
yes, lots of times... blogs, posters, travel brochures, airport ads,etc..
at first it was thrilling..
you run around town telling everyone "weeeee, i am a stock photographer!!!"

but eventually, when you consider that it used to be you get paid 100 to 1000 dollars in the old glory days to shoot one of those things,
and you now get 28 cents to 102 dollars,
the novelty sort of wears out ...
and you no longer go "woo yay!!!"
..and you react like your frederich neitsche family member...
ie. blank stare with a duh face looking like a giant question mark, "uhhh, so? what is your point?"

72
Santa Claus a fictional character!!!????....oh no my life is in tatters people on this forum are so cynical......

Yeah same guy goes around telling people there's no Easter Bunny! Santa is real, I've seen him flying through the Winter night.  :-*

Subject release or artists property release?

it won't help you this year, but you can surely get him to sign the MR on dec 24th
when you leave him cookies under the tree,
leave a MR with a note "please sign the model release, Mr. Claus,
and get rudolph or an elf to witness it, thx!!!"

mine was the best ever ever .. $11k  ;D ;D ;D

wow, congrats, did you achieved $11k in a month? thats really amazing

You actually take etudiante_rapide for real  ;D

Oh got it. Thats something with the recent ss bug lol.

ya, and i had to return my spiffy sportscar that i bought with the 11k i earned that day as a down-payment... boo hoo !!! :'(

congrats!!! it's typical for any agency other than istock or ss.
as suggested, with ss you should get a payout monthly now with their 35 bucks payout .
and getting in is even easier than dripping molasses in winter...

go for it, you will see a honeymoon period of sales at the first 3 months...
then a slowdown. but at least you will bring home 105 bucks in 3 months with ss as a newbie.

i find canstock is more picky than ss; at least when i was with them.
so you should get better results with ss.
