When I started my microstock business end of 2009 I wanted a second paypal account just for that to make bookkeeping/tax filing easier. No, I couldn't. Paypal refused to open a second account with my name and linked to the same bank account.
If they changed their policy I'd be interested to know, too.

if its that annoying for people I could just loop through them at creation and update a site option that they've been initially created. Then on next installs it will check - and if its already done the process it will skip it.
Leave them in for initial install. It helps people setting up their site. For next installs an option to skip re-creation of build-in categories would be great.

Hey, is there a way to delete those darn standard categories permanently? I mean, I delete those build-in categories I don't need/want but after the next update they are there again. Is there an easy way around deleting them every time again?

If any of you want to do some homework I'll be happy to implement your findings in a while. I think a big focus for now (the next few months) should be earning your way up google and getting traffic. That way when I come back there will be plenty of demand on the cart
You are right about this, Leo. No summer break for me. I hope I'll have 1000+ images online by end of this summer. And I will continue working on look and functionality of my SY site. Let's see how deep I dare diving into coding (The cart/cookie/paypal thing is definitely beyond my reach, though)

Just to clarify: I'd have no trouble paying a fee for their service.
But with storage needs < 0.5GB / month and outgoing traffic > 3 GB / month I am looking at a subscription price of USD $49.99 / month. Sorry that's too much.
PicWorkFlow charges $0.01 per file and upload site. At roughly 100 image files per month distributed to a dozen sites their bill would add up to a more reasonable $12.00 per month. And this is no subscription, meaning you only pay for what you are actually using. However, last time I tried (about 6 months ago) PicWorkFlow had still issues with loosing metadata in the upload process.... - Well, I guess I'll try again soon!

I'm the kind of guy that likes to kill multiple problems at once - so if we make a cookie-dependent system we have to have the sites share the cookies (everyone loves it when you share your cookies) and suddenly you can see your cart among multiple sites.
When your ready to buy...its just a quick paypal per site. not a register, check-email, verify...paypal, download...
Too bad I'm on summer break! ...do we know any coders?
The cart system is actually simple enough for someone to just jump in and start having fun.
Thank you Leo for chipping in here despite your summer break. The cookie-dependent/cookie-sharing system you explain sounds like the solution to the registration hassle. I am not even sure if "just a quick paypal per site" would be required. Paypal might be able to distribute parts of the total to several sites. At least I remember doing online shopping with paypal where my payment was divided between two involved parties on the seller's side. This is definitely no call to end your summer break, Leo, but a try to pin-point areas that need attention for the whole SY project to become a huge success. - Any coders out there?

I personally find this image disgusting. Nothing optimistic in it for me. Too dark. The issue of human cloning comes to my mind. If this is the future people image style because every photographer has to cut cost (and has to be good as a photoshop artist) then I am really glad that I am NOT into people photography.
That said, however, I can see this image selling well.
Thanks for showing, anyway.

Lightburner worked reasonably well for me. I guessed it wouldn't be free forever. But their subscription plans don't fit my needs at all as I only use distribution bandwidth but no storage (or just for as long as needed for distribution). If they stick to their bronze/silver/gold/custom plan as is I will have to look elsewhere for a solution.

I agree 120%! The great effort of inventing and building a new network solution for image buyers will in vain if we can't find, agree on and build a better registration/payment/download solution. This needs work!

That's weird. It sure doesn't work without the plugin on my site...

And make sure the plugin "Related Posts By Taxonomy" is activated...
I have seen and read that but cannot work out what it is, can you explain what it is for/does please
As far as I can tell, this is the actual bit of code that does the search and control of similar images.
Wordpress is made up of blocks ( think Lego) that are then put together to create the theme you want. If there isn't a block you need, you build it.
Yes, that how I understand it, too. In any case, I know for sure that SY's similar images widget doesn't work when this plugin is missing or being deactivated.

I think I found a minor bug:
This is what I filled in in my backend:
Home Location: Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada Temporary Location 1: Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Canada (in July 2013)
And this is what my authors page shows:
Home Location: Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada Temporary Location 1: Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada

I am seeing a new plugin called Related Posts by Taxonomy. Is that something that has been added by Leo and does it have to be there?
Nice catch! Yes, I guess it has to be there AND it has to be activated for the similar images widget to work. At least activating it solved my similar images issue. I have no clue, though, why it got deactivated...

Very true, but a very big "if", too. I'd be happy if Self-Hosted on the right would rise into the numbers and then into the middle tier region within a couple years. And I think THAT is quite possible.
I vote for it with my numbers every month.
Me too. Problem is my number is usually 0. I just hope SY will change that, though. With a little progress SY will be more convenient than the traditional method anyway. For now its just planting the seed and getting things started.
That's exactly the way I see it. I will risk putting a number of my better images exclusively on my SY site, promoted it and see. If/when site traffic picks up and regular sales happen I'll be happy to gradually abandon most of the micro sites. Although this is still a looong way for the seed to grow.

YES, The author avatar works. It was just me. I got confused between wp post, attachment and actual image. Must have been late last night...
Another thing I noticed: My similar images widget apparently stopped working.

Stephan, might be the same reason, you do not allow right clicking so it is difficult to see but the path does not seem to be an image - just put the correct path in your profile and remember to save it
Yep, I actually had the same footer issue. No problem to reactivate the widgets, though.
However, I can't seem to figure out how to show my "Author avatar" on my Symbiocard. Any ideas what went wrong/how to fix this?
User area. Special pic u make and inserrt url. Besides that ur network tab has some fields
Thing is, I did all that. But, OK, I'll check again and poke around. Hope I'll get it to work eventually...

If everyone sold direct then there would be no need for agencies and ever lowering the prices.
I don't know if anyone is considering going totally independent but just thing what would happen if everyone did - real prices!

Hey, how come I find tons of my images on your site (with no reference to me as copyright holder)? Who is (are) your partner site(s)?

Awesome Job, Leo! Updating from version 1.3.7 went like a breeze. Can't find any problem with my meanwhile heavily customized child theme. Thank you so much!!!
I filled in my Symbiocard, which is online now (I hope). I will start uploading photos in earnest beginning next week.
So, how do I build my network? - I just punch in the web addresses of Symbiostock sites I want to network with and if their Symbiocards are available the system does the all hard set-up work? Did I understand that correctly?

I don't think it will be possible to provide limitless search results at least for common keywords. So when searching for e.g. "flower" the program must decide. Now way around it.
How about a combined approach? Like pick X of the Y sites networked partly based on sites that have the most matches (for "flower" in this case) and partly based on sites with heaviest concentration (which probably means they specialize in "flower" images). Then, if that's not enough, let user ask for more.
definitely -- each site will be able to tinker with their searches; very general keywords are always going to be a problem - partly because anyone using them doesn't know yet what they really want!
right now's a time to think of what sort of info we might want, since it's a lot easier to start collecting now than to retrofit
I like the idea of everyone of us being able to design their own searches very much, if that's what you mean by "tinker". So are you asking us for more ideas/options how a search could work? - The search could allow users to define price range/license options (e.g. editorial)/max available image size - Some micro sites allow to limit search by main color(s) in images - Other search criteria such as location of copy space might be relevant for image buyers. I have no idea, though, if code could locate those spots automatically. (Photocase for instance uses options for copyspace location in their controlled keyword system) - X of Y sites could be picked by the search based on maximum variety in colors used/price range/license options/images sizes if users don't limit their searches. That might help those that don't know what they really want. - Variety of search results could be optimized if search would pick X of Y sites that have the most non-matching keywords (beside the one(s) searched for). This might be tricky though as it could invite keyword spammers. I have to quit brainstorming now as supper is served
