Hi All
I imagine most of you, like myself try to carry a camera with you when ever possible. Just for those unexpected images that come your way during the course of the day. I've never warmed up to the idea of using my smart phone as my every day camera.

For practicality's stake, I carry a Compact Cannon G12 with me most of the time. It's light, easy to store and the image quality most of the time is sufficient. In fact some of my best selling images were taken with this camera.

But, at times image quality is a issue. That's when I  kick myself in the rear for not going through the trouble of carrying my DSLR gear with me daily.
What have you found that works best for you?
Thank you :)

Fujifilm X100s --- size and quality are great but the auto focusing suck both in speed and ability in low light. You can manually focus but it is a slow process. On the flip side, the image/lens quality are great. I've made quite a few stock images with this camera.

I carry my Canon G15 around, 95% of the time is more than enough to get into micros.
I always downside to 6MP or less to have better acceptance.

I like the Ricoh GR. The quality is fantastic - as good as an consumer DSLR and it really is pocket sized. Excellent controls too. I they made a version with a zoom it'd be perfect.

I love my iPhone - but I recently bought an Olympus OM-D M-1 mirrorless - fabulous quality including in low light - fits in a pocketbook with a small prime lens, but it's not pocket-sized.It's not my "everyday" camera but it gives me excellent quality when I don't want to carry a DSLR and means I can take a camera with me most of the time without major weight.

I also have a Nikon P7000 P&S which is great in good light - zooms from 6mm to telephoto - shoots RAW. You've inspired me to keep it in my glove compartment. It's given me some excellent images that've appeared in newspapers & images I've uploaded to Alamy reportage & news (it's not an accepted camera for regular uploads). I wish I'd bought the G9 at the time. I know a lot of Alamy photographers who love it (it's "acceptable" for all accounts there). For something to always have handy, I'd think the G12 or others in that series or the Fuji would be ideal. (Don't know anything about the Ricoh)

The idea of a camera to have for those unexpected shots is that it's not going to be the same quality as your DSLR but it's going to be better than your iPhone. I think you're on the right track.

I got a Sony A6000 with 16-70mm lens a couple of months ago. It's too big for a pocket, but fits fine in a small Pacsafe shoulderbag, so I can easily carry it with me averywhere.

The picture quality is as good, or even better, than that of my Sony A77, which now has been degraded to second camera.

Sony RX100. Tiny camera. Pocketable.  Good quality output. Not quite dslr quality, but certainly good in reasonable light.

this could be a different question for us girls, as we tend to carry a handbag wherever we go, so my d700+50mm is a good combo.

I take the ricoh gr for photos and the sony rx 100 for videos with me wherever I go.

With a compact you don't have to worry about sensor spots etc....for video that is helpful.

I gave it a go with my Nikon DSLR and it was simply inconvenient.  I'd leave it in the hot car, forget I left it out for someone to see and honestly was usually too busy to actually use it.  Then came the compact.  It would find its way deep into my glove box or middle console. When I did use it I always got caught up in image quality versus my DSLR and eventually gave up. Just my experience.

The camera you left in the studio is the one you should've taken with you...

Exactly my experience as well. Meanwhile I go out for shooting and carry the DSLR or I just detach from anything productive and just dedicate myself to enjoy the moment.

My cell phone has got a camera. And  I carry it around everywhere anyways. No extra luggage.

I've sadly found the opposite to be true, since if you do get a sensor spot you can't get rid of it - unless sending the camera away. The Ricoh GRiv is a brilliant, pocketable camera but that dust bunny in the sky does annoy me at times...
