Hi,

I just wondered if anyone had any experience of moving from istock to Getty or selling images on both.

Am I right in thinking the options are to:

1 - make an application direct to Getty with examples of your work

2- Go exclusive with istock so that images go into the Signiture collection which can then potentially be sold on Getty...?

Yes those are two common ways. I started with iStock as an exclusive and got a contract with Getty through them.

You can also submit images to other macro sites and many of them partner with Getty and sell images through them. There are also a couple of mobile apps that sublicense images through Getty.

I've been on Getty for quite some time and the earnings there are a fraction of what i make on istock. They have a much smaller set of my photos (100+) compared to iStock (1000+) but i get almost no sales there and the RPI is almost the same as iStock but eith the added hassel of exclusivity.

I have worked as a retoucher for various Getty photographers over the years and always sort of seen Getty as the one for me to aim for.

I've only actually been shooting and uploading fairly recently to istock, shutterstock and Fotolia and just trying to weigh up the pros and cons of going exclusive with istock with the potential of selling images through Getty in the future...

I'm still a way off at the moment and need to build my portfolio but just thinking ahead...

All info and experience from you guys is much appreciated.

Once upon a time that was the business to be directly with Getty but today its of no importance at all. In fact Getty sales can very often be less then micro.

Back in the day my goal was to get into Getty. I made it and for a while the RPI was amazing but I was late to the party. As micro grew my macro revenue quickly dropped. Big sales were replaced by sales of a few dollars or cents. Or even a fraction of a cent. Seriously, .0001.

I'm sure there are still plenty of people making big money there but they're probably making equally huge investments to produce unique or highly niche imagery. The days of submitting generic stuff and making big money are long gone. And the type of stuff I shoot isn't what they want anymore. The stuff they want now would cost a small fortune in production costs to create and I decided I wasn't going to risk the money to see if I'd get big dollars or pennies in return.

I am not too sure there are any really big earners left at Getty. I know in the old days there was some huge earners but not today. I was actually planning on getting out of micro quit SS and Adobe all of them and take my port with me and concentrate on the smaller more traditional agencies but I guess I have to persevere another year or something.

The Getty forums are full of people who praise Getty to the skies

I hear there are religious cults a bit like that too....

Wouldn't want to join either

I'm sure there's still some people making big money but I'd guess they're the ones that have deep pockets and connections to be able to fulfill requests like "Large group of LGBT diverse ethnicity fit seniors playing shuffleboard on a cruise ship".

Just out of curiosity what do people consider as good money from stock these days...?

I'm fairly new so i'm aiming for 3 figures per month as a target for the moment (still a way off that so far!

)

3 figures a month is absolutely good money. Getty used to deliver that with just 2-3 downloads a few years back. Now its almost down to a dollar per download.

Can you name some of these macro sites that partner or some mobile app? I won't ever go exclusive and application to Getty receives no reply.

A big factor is how much time you want to put in and how much you want to spend on props models etc. In the end you have to work out whats good for you. From the port you put up if you work hard I think you could do well. Me not so much cos I like taking pictures of things I like and am not that hard working but I get a reasonable return for what I put in.
