I am wondering about the quality of the photos that show in the main page (latest uploads, I pressume) and how that can affect the perception buyers get from this site.  I welcome the idea of a wide approach in the themes of the pics that are accepted, especially since many micros are underserved in some areas (as being "not stock" in their perception).  But I wonder if images that have been clearly improvised and without any editing being uploaded are going to give buyers the idea that the quality of this collection, as a whole, is not that good.  There are lots of images of people's backs, other images in which the built-in flash was the source of light, images taken on a harsh midday light and very large series of similars that show up quite frequently.  There are even images of people with T-shirts with the names of universities that are marked as RF!  I'm not the best photographer out there, on the contrary, I'm an amateur, but I've seen in the last four or five years that the sites that thrive the most are the ones that are "picky" with their collections.

I hope they look into this because I really like them and I've had more sales there in my first month than on 123RF and BigStock and they promise a lot if they can correct these situations.

sorta contradictory there... but i realize 3d's only been here a short time -- but in first 2 month they've outperformed some of my pickier agencies -- 123, IS and FT

Even though sales are fairly good for such a young site, I have to agree with Herman on his view, some of the photos being accepted @ 3D seem to be very badly improvised and lacking any editing, and some even having little or no stock value IMO, not a good way to start a good quality library of images, specially from a site that has the potential of becoming a good seller in the near future, also the repetition of hundred of images based on the same or similar subject could be tiresome for any buyer, or anyone for that matter, to have to go thru while looking for a specific photo or "vector".  ;)

In their blog you can see a photographer that reports his 3000th image upload and his portfolio are countless series of similars each of 10-20 images.

I see lots of renderings which are from all kinds from tutorials of many different 3D applications?!?
I dont want to bee suspicious but it seams to be very very tricky about they 3d model release what they authors claims that they are of they own?
Maybe they models are different but in few percent of modifying original mesh with some little screw or other filter or basic 3d editing tools, eg like to remove birth mark from Marilyn Monroe or add them to the ass of my 3d car like stamb tool in photoshop or image ready or elements?!?

Anyhow very confusive childish site in organization and visibility, rudimentary cathegories like 20% of Fotolias chategorisations and we dont know about they search engine.

Oh I see first few days I have 3000 vievs and after 2 months only additional 1400???
Something is very bad there...

I don't know a whole lot about 3d modeling, but I do know that in just under a month I've had 16,623 views and 2 sales. When I do a search for something and search only photos, a HUGE percentage of the results are renders or illustrations. I'd really like to see them do something about that.

I agree with filtering or splitting photographs and illustrations, but they might have been caught out by the take-up of new contributors to carry out any site changes yet, I joined because they had loyal customers and over 300K of assets mainly non photographs these were built up over 13 years, after a push into photographs and illustrations they announced a month ago they reached 400,000 looking today their library could hit 500,000 within a week.

The management of these new assets will take some real effort as the collection grows, they will need to improve the search options to attract or keep buyers, the website does look dated but it works for thier customers as it was not designed for just stock images, the owners seem ok and do communicate well, like most sites they will take time to find where they fit in.

I doubt if they will ever make a large percentage of income, if we maintain perspective, do not expect to much to soon, look for organic growth from an established asset website, just look on The3dStudio for supplimentry income, if you have PayPal they pay out each month whatever you have accumulated which then limits the risk of loosing any income.

16 Artists used my affiliate link and 14 of these are active contributors, it will be interesting to see how thing develop.

They addressed my post on their blog (which is the same here) and they explained that they are going to be between self-editing and editing (they say that pics that are not that good are selling, but they will weed-out the worst and become stricter when they reach some point).

I think that it is a valid point for a start-up (well, in their case, not so start-up) to be lenient with their initial submitters and become stricter down the road.  What I like is that they actually listen... And sell!

The 3d Studio announced today a Member Loyalty Program
http://photoinfos.blogspot.com/2009/09/the3dstudiocom-has-500000-resources-and.html

You have to agree to sell with them for the next 5 years, and for that your receive 10% more royalty. That mounts up then to 70% royalty rate.

Adeptris,
Are you going to sign up? Anyone else signing up? 5 years is a long time.

In micro time 5 years is something as several eons... A very very long long time... I'm not sure if this is a way to go.

Wayyyyyyy too long!...besides, what are the regulations and agreements on that contract they're talking about?, is there a minimum of uploads per months, weeks, years after the first 500 images?...I agree with Idambies, I'm not signing up for now.

Adeptris, Are you going to sign up? Anyone else signing up? 5 years is a long time.

A photographer with a huge portfolio on a number of websites is unlikely to change thier direction, so this might be attractive as it will maximize their return from The3dStudio.

There could be a number of reasons I might want to remove an image from sale, a buy-out, the request of a model, to make an image exclusive on another stocksite, to become exclusive somewhere, a change of direction etc:

I have a small portfolio and still looking to find the right markets and find it to restrictive, as said 5 years is a long time and it is frustrating removing images that are time locked, 6 months to a year is managable with an option to 'buy-out' or apply for a singe image deletion by request, I would not sign up yet, because I am leaving my options open to be more flexible to market changes.

Hello Everyone,

Just checking in to see what's happening here and I do agree many of you have valid points which we are listening to and which we appreciate. All suggestions, criticisms are welcome and helpful to us.

Re our new Member Loyalty Program: Today Matt is announcing he is dropping the minimum number of products one must have to join the program. Yes, it is still 5 years. One does not have to be exclusive with us though. And there will be ways to delete products if an author/photographer needs to for valid reasons, within the 5 years. That likely will be handled on a case by case basis at least for now.

We have discussed the website design and will have some updating next month or possibly at the end of Oct. Because we are a 3D site as well as stock photos, it probably will never please all the modelers or all the photographers. It must load quickly for one thing--that is a primary factor for us.

As far as categories for searches, etc. we are open to adding more if you want to suggest things. At this time we do have stock photos and images together, and yes, there are a lot of Gold Guys and many more to come. So we may have to work on either splitting categories or adding subcategories.

We are also working on some designs for banner ad for this site and others that will be targeted toward stock buyers.  Again, suggestions always welcome so if you have thoughts on places for such ads let us know.

We did hit 500,000 resources Tuesday and are still growing.  :)

Please feel free to email me any comments, ideas you want to share, etc. as well as posting here or on your blog on T3DS.

I haven't uploaded there recently and currently have 200 plus images on their site.  The results have been 0 sales with 1000 +  views.

I still think most buyers at this site are just interested in their 3D content!

yes, when you upload you get a lot of views. I've had 28 thousand + clicks since I've been with them. As soon as you stop uploading you don't get as many clicks on your images.
