Does anybody think this could remotely be good news for us? From Unsplash:

Unsplash is being acquired by Getty Images

Im excited to share Unsplash is being acquired by Getty Images today.

The reason Im excited about this acquisition is because its not goodbye, its about acceleration.

This is not one of those tech acquisitions where the company is bought to be shut down. Unsplash will continue to operate as a standalone brand and division of Getty Images. The entire Unsplash team will be staying and building Unsplash in the direction we have been. The main difference now is we have access to the resources and experience of Getty Images to help accelerate our plans to create the worlds most useful visual asset library.

In 2016, we first met the Getty Images team. We werent sure they would see the world the same way we did given their business was largely built on licensing. Over years of conversations, however, we learned about the level of respect they had for the Unsplash community and the rights of creators to choose how and where their imagery is made available. Craig Peters, Getty Images CEO, told me, We have so much admiration for Unsplash. What youre doing for creativity and what youve built is incredible.

It also became clear we shared a similar view of the world. The impact of imagery has never been greater and will only become greater in the future. And we both aim to push that impact further than anyone has ever done before.

After interacting with the team at Getty Images more and better understanding their long-term vision, we realized we shared so much alignment that going at this together could be much more impactful than going at it separately.

The guy who owned istock said more or less exactly the same thing when Getty wooed and bought him.

So let me get this straight. Getty Images, a company known for shrewd financial business practices, is going to take their profits and invest in growing a standalone company that provides free photos? Riiiiiiiiiggghht! If there wasn't a method or loophole to monetize Unsplash and boost Getty profits and revenue, there would be zero interest from Getty. It'll be interesting to see how they spin this in their financial favor while also continuing to not pay contributors anything.

Their spin is on their forum.

Allow me to translate:

It's eerie how much this sounds like Bruce speaking when Getty purchased IStock. Almost like it has been written by the same press team (i.e. Getttys)

Without istock - Getty Images probably shut down business years ago. Istock is paying the bill for Getty Images, even for the Unsplash deal.

Quite the opposite. Getty is still the largest in the world, they have all kinds of news, publications, contracts, and big buyers. Getty is not financed by iStock micro sales. Think past and outside Microstock.

The easy answer to why Getty bought Unsplash. The most used word in searches on the Internet is "FREE". Pair that with what people search for looking for images "Free Photo" and you have the answer. Unsplash also brings in ad revenue for a profit.

Someone searches Free Photo and they get Unsplash the largest, they look and see lots of images, but the one they want or need is not free, which directs them to IS for a sale. Unsplash directs traffic and brings people to iStock.

Hardly complicated as this will bring more new buyers and more business to Getty.

Yes and another way of looking at this is, another Getty controlled Zombie is created.

I'm still puzzled how well those free agencies are doing. They get their content for free from the photographers and then they make millions of ad revenue and get to keep 100% for themselves. That does not sound very ethical business and  I'm pretty sure that if 100% photographers would know the fact that they enable that they would take their photos from the sites but as it is advertised also to photographers and it is the community thing and so on.

Is there anywhere told how much was the price for Unsplash? I have read in their blog year or two ago where they said that their monthly expenses are over 98.000 dollars so only expenses are over a million dollars per year. Wonder how much is the net revenue?  ;)

A series of clichs and banalities. Boring.

But look at the highly irritating ads between every paragraph and the pop up video, bloated page with junk filled distractions. I liked the ending, with a comment about blog ethics. 100% click bait.

Here's something from somewhere else. Unsplash Hire FAQ: landing page listings will prioritize contributors with relevant photos on Unsplash. Strong content on Unsplash can translate into being listed above others, leading to more potential opportunities.

The more you have listed free on Unsplash the higher you will be ranked on Unsplash Hire for private contract work. Well played.

How much? We don't know yet: "CPE News (3/30/2021) Getty Images has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Unsplash. The transaction is expected to close at the close of the month. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Unsplash has been principally backed by Boston based Accomplice. Unplash investors also include Simple Token (OST), Betaworks Ventures, Real Venture and private investors."

Or better still, use an ad blocker! I still see the pop up video, but in about 2 seconds it zooms down to one corner where I hardly notice it.

I do have ad blockers, maybe not the right one. The video does go down to the corner, but it's still running. So the site is getting paid for a view. Why should I support those stupid invasive videos. The whole fraud is that marketing has told advertisers that people want video, not text and that people are watching them. That's not the truth. When Facebook  and I'm sure others, count a view as 3 seconds, you know they are trying to push a false impression, to make more money.

So are you saying all those ads between the paragraphs, don't show if I have a better ad blocker?

Which one, maybe I need something different.  :)

If you aren't seeing all of these, please tell me what ad blocker I should have installed in Firefox. I need it!

I'm seeing black boxes not ads.  Using Adblocker Ultimate and Disable HTML5 autoplay.

Thanks, going to install now. Oh I see, I had it and somehow it was disabled. Thanks for the reminder to look. The little sign shows 13 ads blocked on that site.  8)

Yes, like ShadySue I only see the video. I use AdGuard, it's free and much better than AdBlock.
