Author Topic: Ultra low commisions on Getty this month - Wochit (Read 15519 times)

I've got quite a few Rights Ready clips on Getty which were migrated over when they took over Photo Library a few years back. Generally I'm pretty happy with them since decent high priced sales come along often enough to cancel out the annoying low priced Premium Access sales. Well this month my report came through and I started salivating when I saw it was 6 pages long, almost too good to be true - well it was. I had a large number or Rights Ready sales amounting to mere pennies - $0.04, $0.10 etc which came from an outfit called Wochit.

I went to their website and it seems to be some sort of online video creation / syndication portal. I'm not exactly sure how it works but needless to say I'm not enthralled by the idea of people having access to my footage and my compensation amounting to pennies. Anyone else familiar with Wochit or had their footage used on their portal? Would be interested to find out.

Can someone please explain how the same company can justify sales ranging from a few cents to hundreds of dollars for the same content?

If I understand correctly Rights Ready means Rights Managed? What kind of usage justifies a license comission of 4 cents?

Oh yes, hammered here, I had 44 sales and didn't even clear $100.00 Same boat as you and angry doesn't come close!

My Getty footage sales haven't been reported yet and I haven't had below 40 sales per month since I started back in 2012. All mine are RF so just hoping the RR is calculated first?

For RF I'm beginning to see small download $ amounts too and I'm beginning to think that Getty / istock are taking the piss way too much on this! If I understand it correctly for all the big players they pay getty a large $ amount each year so they can download clips for next to nothing. We get a % of the next to nothing where as Getty keeps the large $ to join the club each year. Sounds like were all being conned!

They have not started the RF yet for Getty so I hope it is better for everyone.

I am glad i am only uploading ultra simple content and the testshots to istock/getty. This sounds like another google type deal.

My sympathies to all that are exclusive and cannot avoid this nonsense.

I didn´t upload for a long time, but then thought that uploading testshots will at least keep me informed how things are going and they sell.

I keep hoping against past experience, but I just like the istock video team, they are such great people.

Sorry to hear you've been inundated with these sales too jjneff, were they Wochit too or other companies? Last month's report was a bonanza of high priced and a nice pre-Christmas bonus - this month polar opposite. Even many of the non-Wochit sales were in the $10 - $20 range which I'd just rather not bother with.

I got hit with this too. Dozens of video sales for pennies each. Not very happy about it!

I don't see anything about it on the getty artists forum but I did notice that the forum is a ghost town.

their forum is "private" and heavily moderated/restricted
they learned a lesson during the Google drive unrest

The Getty Google deal taught the artist to go underground, there are a very large number of private,closed and secret groups, where people can say what they think.

Which is very sad, you can´t build a community spirit if people are scared.

But they are probably not interested in reviving the old istock community, if the getty people never experienced it. They probably don´t even know why we miss it so much or how powerful a pull it was.

They have enough content anyway, so who cares?

Better royalties in January (statement just came through.) None of the silly pennies like in December.

January was generally quiet but Getty came through better than expected.

If you look at Wochit's pricing it's a subscription where you make 4 videos a month for $30 or 15 for $100 (there is a custom option but they don't publish prices)

They offer unrestricted access to music clips and video for those 4 or 10 videos, so whatever portion of the $7.50 or $6.67 goes to royalties might be shared, but I still don't see how you get to 10 cent royalties. In other words Wochit prices are low, but it still seems like the creator is getting next to nothing. Even if 10 cents is 20% of what Getty receives, 50 cent royalty out of $7.50 paid by the buyer?

They also allow the video to be used to generate ad revenue - not sure what the standards are but it almost seems like the type of use that should require an extended license. Is this a standard right to offer with a royalty free video?

wow, interesting, i always associate getty with big money in stock photos, and ss little pen(n)i(e)s in stock photography.
is this the shapes of things to come? like when prince quit sony???

can we succeed without the big agencies like getty, ss, is???
is prince, U2, sinead oconnor, loreena mckeenon, etc.. making more money independently
than with the big giants taking 95 cts to the dollar???

i think music and stock photography have alot in common. only thing is, music has youtube,etc..
and stock photographers have NFA

Heck, no - there can be huge sales, but many Getty sales net togs tiny amounts. Looking at my own sales, the amount is nothing to do with the image (the same image can have good or tiny values) and everything to do with the deal the buyer has. Though they say that some of the sub-$1 sales are really limited time RM.

Thanks for that insight into WoChit Jo Ann - hopefully they don't appear on my monthly statements again in the future!
