We all have thousands of pictures sitting on our hard drives or saved on line. Have you ever wondered what would happen to all those photos if your hard drive crashed? I've always wondered what would happen if those backup CD's went out of style...sorta like the floppy disk or VCR's. The next generation wouldn't have access to all your photos and those memories would be lost forever. We all remember all those family albums from our childhood, laughing at the way we looked when we were little with those panty hose on our head wishing we had long hair. I'm afraid those old memories will be gone because of the digital age.

I keep multiple copies of all clients images .. external HDD / server / DVD .. fresh copies of DVD's are made at the end of each year and the old DVD's trashed.

My wife scrapbooks our family photos, although I've taken to "blurb"ing some into books as well.

I always did when I first started shooting digital, but then got out of the habit of it because I always think I can do it later. Even photos of the family go onto DVD, so if anyone wants copies, I just make a copy for them on the DVD. Bad habit to get into.

Funnily enough, after over a year trying to coax my 1290 to make glossy prints without red lines, I gave up on it and got an end-of-line 1400 a couple of months ago. Suddenly realised the hand-in for the Camera Club annual competition is on Thursday (have only been entering the 'projected images' section this year) so I thought I'd better do some. So I'm surrounded by inkjet prints from A4 to A3+, both mono, toned and colour for the first time in ages. All except one are pics I've got either on iStock or Alamy.

I know it's so expensive to print you own prints between the cost of the cartridge and the photo paper. I have an Epson Photo printer that does great prints, but Epson paper is the only one that prints with out the lines or the weird colors. I can't buy any off brands or HP brands. I do have to say the paper thickness is better with the Epson brand but sometimes it's hard to find.

Personally I like the Matte paper over the high glossy...to much reflection on the glossy to me.

I always used epson ink/papers. The red lines thing was a known 'feature' with the 1290. I know what you mean about glossy, but judges always like high gloss. I've got some work to do, though. Some of my mono prints have got weird colour casts - not even consistent. Ho hum, it's been a long time.

I have a 1280...it's old but still works great. It was an expensive printer in it's day, but now it's getting to the point that the cartridges for it are not usually in stock at the stores that actually do carry the Epson print cartridges, so I have to order them and usually when I need them, it's right then...not a week later

I have multiple back ups of all my 'work'  photography (DVD, Flash, redundant hard drives).  Family stuff I print up..but don't do it myself.   For me.. it's cheaper to send it to Shutterfly or someone.  Print carts are getting outrageously expensive and... short on ink.  They last for crap far as I'm concerned... both my HP and Epson... print a half dozen 8x10's and the things telling me I need new carts.  I switched to 6 tank system hoping to get better yields...   but no. ...
If I need prints,  I go to a commercial lab.  8)=tom

p.s.  I learned the hard way.  I the last 2 years I have lost 3... yes 3 maxtor external drives.  I don't buy maxtor any longer.

I read of these era being called "the digital darkage" because so many children will grow up and not have a printed photo of themselves.  PMA did a study 4 or 5 years ago and the numbers were something like only 28% of women and 14% of men printed their digital photos.  The price of printing and even the price printing at home has certainly dropped a lot since that time.  I hope more people are printing now.

I am a complete failure, I hardly ever take family photos, never mind printing them!

I did print the ones I like. Mostly 24x36 inches more or less depending on the canva ratio. I'm very happy to do so.

It's a good way to look your image at 100% and see what a designer could see. It's also a good way to decorate and a good conversation subject when people you don't know are visiting... lol

I only print family photos, and not it the past years.  Oh yes, and prints from those disposable underwater cameras I used on occasions.  I was a slide film user, so even in the past I wasn't printing much, only a couple of files for a contest or something.  The images I sold before "becoming a stock photographer" were already in digital form, scanned from slides.

For this past Christmas I actually went the other way and scanned everything that I could find that my parents had for family photos 110, medium, standard 35, safety film, advantix, slides, one off prints. All told some 3000 files by the end and did up DVDs for my parents and younger sister for Christmas gifts. I had the same fear with losing all these film memories as I do with losing the digital ones, all it takes is one fire! I have reprinted a number of them on my hp for myself and side by side it can be hard to tell the difference.

shop had prints at 17" x 12" or some other big but odd size for $2.5 last year I printed about 30-40 shots and was really pleased, they are sitting in a pile on top of a bookshelf as I cant buy frames the right size in my town :):) (and I'm not paying not custom made)

we have 2 digital pic frames, + pcs screensavers. for backups I have 2 copies on seperate drives on my pc, 1 copy on our server, and an external drive that lives in my office at work. But I'm out of disk space again :( and about to buy more drives and that will take me to 5-6tb. Our family pics are also on a few more machines :)
