How do you call this? These people are ranking 21 on the Top-100 of Shutterstock Authors

I suppose each one is kinda different.
Seems like there is money in the graduation caps business and human lightbulbs.

I think that's the top authors by uploads not by sales so what I call it spam

Do a search in that portfolio for "rocket" for example. Hundreds of the same icon with a different label completely incidental to the image. What is Shutterstock playing at!

I think it's polluting the collection, but clearly SS thinks that big numbers of total images matter so they approve this schlock

So people look at the top authors, assuming it means top-selling authors, and discover how to become 'top selling'.
Hell mend 'em. They ended up with the results of their actions.

but this doesnt hurt me, i dont design icons, and it doesnt hurt photographers at all. if you design icons you might be pissed off though

Why would I be pissed? It would only hurt me if I made icons of graduation caps, pencils, lightbulbs? Like the marijuana guy, if I don't have any of that, it doesn't hurt me. It makes SS look stupid and full of spam, but it doesn't cross over any of my sales.

The top 100 page is just by number of files. Is 4800 spam icons in the top 100?

Oh great Link was German, now my SS searches are all in German. Bottom of the page, lower right, click your language of choice.

I don't do icons, but I am a bit pissed about this anyways. I think SS looking stupid drives away buyers which hurts all of us.. But in the meantime, I guess buyers will just go elsewhere, so in the long run it only hurts SS.

Have none of the bigger share holders asked about this at the meetings? Seems weird that the collection growth is one of the main stats carted out every time yet none of them have ever thought to look into it.

No I don't think they have in the transcripts I've seen rather shortsighted in my view. They may start to notice if buyers start to go elsewhere cos they have to wade through too much stuff to find what they want. In what other business is having loads of things for sale seen as a good thing? It would be considered a possible sign of bad inventory management.

I get the impression there is no point getting into selling vectors unless you either make them extraordinarily complex and high quality... or just spam the same basic icon a thousand times. That seems to be the only way to compete.

The ones with a hundred different background colour variants are one thing - you could potentially justify a use for those as jpg downloads for people without vector editing software. The ones that just add a hundred variants on some random 'EPS 10 Vector' logo are the worst.

It's clear their tactic is not to create good images that get popular but to just hope that a new batch of the same images will rake in enough sales this month before uploading the same images again next month, so on and so on.

That kind of behaviour doesn't help anyone so it is odd no action has been taken against this yet...

Because all of this spamming the selling are dropping and the end SS will lose customers! And it not be relevant if we are selling photos or vectors. Yes, they have very big database but it would fill it with this!!!

agree. but also it indicates where ss is prioritizing ...
bloating to give clueless shareholders the idea that they are over-stocking because they
are still in need of images ...
like the owner of a pest-infested building trying to sell his rental apartment block
with full vacany sign.

the bottom will fall out eventually, esp now that adobe is here..
as clients get fed-up of looking for images and see marijuana and other image spam
plus those title spamming images.

get ready to rename shutterstock with an "i" to replace "u".

Whatever happened to submitting only two or three best versions of an idea, if I was a consumer I would be annoyed if having looked at the first one I didn't like it and wanted to see other graduation caps and had to get through these repeats with slight variation.
