I did a quick check on what was eligible for nomination in my portfolio and I don't understand why items that have been downloaded within the last month and have lots of downloads are eligible.

Last time around, I thought it was only things that hadn't been downloaded in a certain amount of time that were eligible.

I'm not assuming; I checked several against my recent downloads list (by hand I would add; there are no ways to see downloads by date for a given image).

Have the rules for what assets can be included changed this time?

This is still the same Jo Ann. If a file was a top seller in the past 12 months it would not be eligible for nomination. In my account, I have some files eligible with hundreds of downloads in the lifetime of the image, but only a couple in the past year. The files that are eligible for nomination were determined last week, so it's likely there will be a few odd exceptions in which an image went on a download spree the past week and is still available for nomination. Please know that in those rare cases, when the nomination process is complete and the final selections are being made, those images will not be accepted. It's not in any of our best interest to pull content from the paid collection if it is trending towards consistent sales.

If you have a file or files, Jo Ann that seem to not align with what I just wrote, please send me an email with the specific file numbers and I'll look up their sales history to check them out.

Thank you,

Mat Hayward

Hi Mat,

several of my eligable files were only uploaded this year (2022), so they werent even online for 12 months... I dont remember that being the case last year. So, did the rules (4 or less sales withing the last 12 months) change after all?

No changes in the selection process that I am aware of. Do those new files have a large number of downloads?

-Mat Hayward

No, they have less than 4 downloads - but they are only online 5 months or less. I was under the impression that they needed to be online at least 1 year to be eligable.

Matt,  You confirmed that downloads of free images do not count towards getting a free subscription.   But if I have 100 images accepted and Adobe pays $5 for each of those images, would it count as 100 sales toward a free subscription?

No, the Free program has no connection to the bonus program in any way.

Thanks,

Mat Hayward

If you get $500 use that to pay for the annual sub

First of all, I would like to thank Mat for the good information and communication. I appreciate it very much!

Nevertheless, the alarm bells generally go off when I read the word "free". Because in my view, it triggers completely the wrong thoughts in the minds of customers.

I have 1,485 files at AS.

For the free collection, 160 files are eligible - just under 11% of all my files. So if all 160 files were selected by Adobe, I could - theoretically - get $800. However, probably only a small portion of them would be selected. I don't know, of course, but it would bring maybe $200 if I released the images for the free collection.

My RPD at AS is $1.17.
Of the 160 files, there is not one with 0 downloads. The image with the most downloads has been purchased 115 times. Together, the 160 images have sold 865 times so far (which is actually 2% of my total downloads - so AS picked really poorly performing images). The revenue for the 160 images so far is $1,012 - calculation based on my average RPD. From May 08 to June 08, these images brought $41.50. If I extrapolate that, I come up with $500 in a year for these files.

One should really think about whether this is worth it, from my point of view. Especially since a couple of the images suggested by AS have counterparts in my portfolio that might not get bought then either. And some of the images are doing quite well at other agencies. Maybe they would not be bought there anymore, if they are available for free at AS.

@Mat,
Three final questions if I may:
1) How come some photos without any downloads are eligible?
2) How come some photos that were recently uploaded are eligible?
3) In the addendum in point 10 it says:
"For Works first placed in the Free Collection after the Effective Date: before a Free Period expires, Adobe will give you prior notice and an opportunity to opt-out of including Works in the Free Collection during the next Renewal Period;"
Does this mean that Adobe can keep it in the free collection as long as you do not fully opt-out of the free collection or are we still able to select and de-select individual photos that have been in the free collection in the previous period? Because I read it as you can only fully opt-out if you do not want a certain photo to be in the free collection anymore after the period expires.

Thanks for the questions. I don't have insight available to share as to the specific selection process for what makes an image eligible or not. That takes care of questions 1 and 2. Sorry, I know it's not what you want to hear, but I dont have any information to share on this and I do not anticipate that changing.

Yes, your interpretation of the updated addendum is correct. If an asset is approved for the Free collection this year, by default it will be opted in for nomination to be considered for the Free collection next year. If approved again, another payment would result automatically. You will have the opportunity to "un-nominate" all or some eligible files for a reasonable time period that will be specified at a later date but unlike this year, that will be a manual process on your end. If you want to keep the files eligible, then no action would be required.

Thanks for the answers. Pitty we cannot have insight and understanding on the first two but they are not so important anyway, just strange.

Just for all clarity because maybe I was not clear.
If I have 100 photos I would nominate now and they all get accepted then next year, by default, they will be nominated again. Which is fine. But let's say I want 90 to continue and 10 not. Will I be able to deselect those 10 images only and let the other 90 go through? Or is my only option, to prevent those 10 photos from going to the free collection again, opting out all together of the free collection? So then none of my images will go to the free collection and none will receive the 5 credit payment.
So, does this sentence: "opportunity to opt-out of including Works in the Free Collection during the next Renewal Period" applies to single/individual photos or the option to make use of this program as a whole?

You would be able to opt out the 10 photos you do not want to be nominated for consideration while leaving the remaining 90 as nominated for consideration.

Thanks,

Mat Hayward

A suggestion for consideration. Adobe could introduce free photos for free subscriptions.   In exchange for an X amount of new exclusive accepted submissions, a contributor gets a free subscription.  Adobe becomes the copyrights owner and such photos are not linked to the photographer unless the photographer opts in to have them visible in their portfolio.  20 photos per year seem a fair number to me.

Thanks for the suggestion. We are not interested in taking over the copyright of the work of photographers however.

Keep in mind, if you have 20 photos approved for Free, we would pay you $100 (assuming you are paid in USD). The cost of the Creative Cloud Photography plan is $9.99 so you could use that $100 to pay for the first 10 months of the subscription. If you had 24 files approved for the Free collection, you could pay for the entire year. This way, the many thousands of contributors who have already received a complimentary Creative Cloud for their successful contribution to Adobe Stock can choose to spend the money they receive on something else.

Thanks again,

Mat Hayward

I do not like the concept of my assets being available for free and would rather give 20 new ones and keep it a secret.  Assets selected by Adobe have in common that they already sell, on this and or other sites.  With the current selecton process for the free collection, clients who paid for an image and subsequently see it for free, that does not result into happy customers.  By building the free collection from fresh exclusive images, this would be avoided.  If I get paid $500 for 100 images, that is because Adobe will make money also, without taking much risks, they are safe bets. Adobe could take risks with the free collection.
I got free subscriptions and used Adobe during that period.  Last year,
I did not qualify and reverted to using other software. Getting a free subscription served as a great incentive to grow and promote my Adobe portfolio and to use the suite. That made me a defacto brand ambassador.     If I was to buy an Adobe subscription, I would look at the special offers I receive from various sources. Adobe does not have a discount rate for its contributors. Maybe something to consider.

No... he said that we can spend our money on CC, among other things. Truly enlightening.

I don't have any information on a 2022 bonus program available yet. As soon as I do, I'll be posting in MSG for sure.

Happy to see this coming again. Last year money i got Was real financial help for me and fact that it's basically "renting" assets for a year is really fair offer for contributors. Fact that I'm in control of my own work is refreshing in sea of agencies basically taking advantage of our hard work. I got a lot for my free asset last year and my downloads did not suffer. Adobe is my best performed agency since then. Thank you Adobe for not being greedy towards us like others are.

Its a little hard to judge how much our earnings were affected as hard to compare. Previous years no free images for subscribers. What has happened im sure is Adobe Stock picked up a load of new subscribers. They arent paying $5 out of the kindness of their hearts. I do believe everyone kind of wins here. I only saw sales go up in the last year and I believe Adobe Stock is killing it now. Its a genius plan

Can't wait for results. Last year I got selected 54 from about 600. And my sales haven't suffered at all, I'm making about 30% more this year than last year.  This year I have eligible 451 photos.

One question, will this year also be more waves, or is this one time thing?

I can't say for sure right now with photos. I expect another wave with vector files down the road when the 12 month anniversary comes up for those. I'll be sure to post information when I have it available.

Matt, when can we expect the first batch to be approved? This month's sales is down the drain and some extra funds would be great to begin the summer slump.

Same question here. It's been 4 days since the images eligible went in for review. Is there any date we should expect some extra bucks?

Thanks!
