Author Topic: New keyword rejection from BigStock (Read 6326 times)

I've been submitting to BigStock for over 2 years now. They have accepted more of my images than any other agency. And they've always been one of my favorites. I know a lot of people don't seem to do well there, but they usually are ahead of 123 for me.

I just received the status back on a batch of 28 images I submitted, and 21 were rejected for keywording!.

what?

Everyone one of those 21 were accepted at iStock, which (up until now!) was the only agency I'd ever received a keywording rejection from, ever. And that happened only once or twice. These were also all accepted at 123, StockXpert, and (of those I've submitted) SS.

Has anyone else ever gotten a keywording rejection from BigStock?

PS - I just noticed that one of those was actually rejected for the wrong category, not keywords!

ETA - They kindly do allow changing the keywords without re-uploading. But honestly, I have no idea what keywords they don't like, so I can't possibly attempt to fix all these.

I Would contact [email protected] and ask them to tell you what is wrong with the keywording of the images. In most cases that should work.

I have never had such a reject in nearly 3 years at BigStock. This could be from a new approver that screwed up!

Either way Service should be able to help you.

Keywords: The safe way. If you cannot see the "word" in the image do not add it. EX: You see a black hat, you can add, black and hat but do not add sunglasses if the subject is not in the image.

I avoid adding conceptual feelings in an image. Such as Happy if the person is not displaying a happy look.

Yes, I get some wrong also but I do try and that is about all we can do.

Thanks, Larry. I guess I will have to write them, since I really have no idea what keywords they don't like, and which ones they want removed.

I'm generally fairly conservative (I think!) when it comes to keywording, which is why I've never had any such rejections before except once or maybe twice from IS. Oh, well.

Absolutely make contact. I very seldom question a rejection but have done so at BS. And, the rejection was immediately reversed. I think reviewers do make mistakes.

You mean, they're human, too?

In this case, though, I don't see how it could be a mistake. More likely, it's an inexperienced reviewer, or (less likely) some new policy. I'll write them asap.

Follow-up post:

Well, here goes my anonymity with regards to BigStock, but that's ok. I don't think I'll ever have anything bad enough to say about them such that they would ever feel a need for retribution (nor do I think they do such things, anyway).

After a few messages with Joseph, my best guess is that the thing that caused the problem was my inclusion of my user name among my keywords.

I don't really understand why that is a problem, since it isn't a term that a buyer would ever enter (unless, by chance, they were looking for images from me). I started including it a while back; about 1/4 of my portfolio has it in there. But I guess from now on I'm going to have to remove it whenever I upload to BigStock. If I can remember.

The images were not rejected, by the way. That's why I can re-edit and re-submit without re-uploading. They were returned to my queue for further processing.

Sometimes a person might have things in their title/description/keywords that does not describe the image. Sometimes it is totally off subject.
For instance it is a simple picture of a woman with a computer.... Some people put in the title computer and then also have numbers that probably belong to the file name. File name numbers should not be in the title. SomIt should describe the image.

Sometimes you might have a picture of a poloraid picture... blank.. and it will have it in the title/description/ and keywords.
The reviewer has to remove that word for copyrights because Poloroid is a brand name. That submitter might have 5-20 images with that in it. It makes sense to return it back to their cue so they may revise it and then it is not rejected and go against their acceptance ratio.

Also names of people and any copyrighted type of name or word should not be in it as well.
Reviewers do make mistakes. It doesnt hurt to ask if there is totally nothing wrong with your data included with your image.

Ah, yes, your name in keywords. That will do it. I have always heard that our names should not appear in keywords.

Early on I tried it and got a few rejected and stopped right away. Personally, I'm with you. I don't see the issue. What faster way to find images by a photographer than by searching their name as a keyword? Even when I search by contributor on some sites, contributors are listed in alphabetical order so you have to scroll through pages and pages to get to the letter your photog starts with. That's pretty annoying.

Some sites don't like that you have numbers in the title that indicate a series (such as "Balloons - 1" "Balloons - 2", and I understand that, although it is not that relevant. I don't see why they are against people having their nicks or names in the keywords, they won't hurt. This is not actually spam.

Wouldn't that depend on your name? I mean, my middle name is Naked, and if I included it in all my keywords, well, wouldn't that screw up a lot of searches?
